It's essential in Football to try provide variation with your set pieces but if you don’t get many, I suggest you get a “go to” standard routine in place.

If your corners keep being delivered in the same way, then the more likely your opponents will notice and intercept, but at Grassroots level most coaches will not notice, or work it out!

Mix your “non heading” players movements up, to confuse your opponents, by assigning different runs to all your attacking players at corners.

Designate one of your team be corner taker, and make sure all of your side knows what his/her signals mean.

Communication is vital if you want to succeed with your set pieces!

Their corners should be just hitting the ball into the box, but to the same spot every time!

I suggest aiming the ball at an area on the 6 yard box in line with the front post.

Put all your players on that area to start with EXCEPT THE PERSON WHO IS HEADING THE BALL, but just before the ball is kicked get them all to spread out and move away from that area - the defenders will go with them AND this will also distract the goalie!!

Get your chosen “header” (find the team’s best header and get them to practice) to go ANYWHERE except that, busy and congested, area initially, but to time their run to go into it as soon as the corner is taken!

You (as a coach) need to do the following

  • work with the corner kick taker on their delivery

  • Identify, and work with, the “header” on their attacking headers and timing of the run, try to use a smaller, good header as defenders often target the bigger defenders as the “ones to watch”!!

  • Use the “bigger defenders” as decoys and get them into the habit of making “runs off the ball”!!

  • Work with the others on heading (in case delivery is wrong) and also finishing from close range as there may be many “close in” chances created

You can also use this “routine” for free kicks in the attacking third when a shot in target is not the best solution!!

Practice makes perfect and by following this plan, you'll be making those corners count!
